History Exhibition

The first department through which the Museum in Shtip began its work from its very establishment is the History Department. The mission of the History Department is to collect, research, preserve, and promote historical items and materials related to the history of the city of Shtip, from the earliest periods to the 20th century. Through exhibitions, publications, and the organization of events and workshops, the department remains open and accessible to the public.

The permanent history exhibition, “Shtip Through History from the 1st to the 20th Century,” was opened on 21 December 2011. It presents a chronological overview—from the ancient period to the formation of independent Macedonia—of key historical events connected to Shtip and the Shtip region. The exhibition is housed in the House of the Arsov brothers, the native home of Todor Arsov, originally from Shtip, who played an important role in Macedonian history. A special part of the exhibition is dedicated to his life and work. Through exhibits and photographs, visitors can follow the history of the city of Shtip from the 1st to the 20th century.
The exhibition includes over 1,000 valuable items—around 500 of which are photographs—as well as weapons, documents, letters, testimonies, banknotes, stamps from football clubs, decorations, and medals awarded to citizens of Shtip.

Since 2025, as part of the permanent history exhibition, a section has been dedicated to the first medical school and the first medical college in Macedonia. A special focus is placed on Slavjanka Vlahcheva, a native of Shtip, whose contribution is of particular importance to medicine in Macedonia.
