The people of Shtip were actively involved in the National Liberation War (NOB). During the Second World War, around 200 fighters from Shtip joined the resistance against fascism, of whom 81 lost their lives (68 in direct combat against the enemy).
In their honor, in 1974, the Assembly of the Municipality of Shtip erected a memorial monument on the eastern side of Isar, dedicated to the fallen fighters of the National Liberation War. The monument was designed by architect Bogdan Bogdanović.
